Homes for Bedford's older people
We've been offering almshouse accommodation for over 250 years. Our original houses occupied the row of blue door buildings on Dame Alice Street in the town centre and over the years we have developed our offer with a number of properties in and around Bedford.
Our current portfolio of accommodation is listed on our options page. We have 'nomination rights' to a number of apartments at each site, and this has been made possible either because we have either made a sizeable investment into the development of the accommodation, or (where we own the land itself), because we have offered an extended lease at a peppercorn rate.
All our accommodation offers:

- Private accommodation with your own front door
- A mix of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments
- emergency alarm systems with help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- A duty manager
- Regular social activities

Residents pay a weekly maintenance charge, including a small charge for support services. Many get help to pay for this through housing benefit.
We currently have a number of options available for older residents including Dame Alice Court, Sir William Harpur House, Oakway House and the Wixams Retirement Village
