Volunteering

You could help support local charities like the ones we fund through our Grants Programme by volunteering in roles such as befriending, helping at events, administration, offering support services or working in a charity shop. Charities are also always looking for trustees to help govern the organisation and direct how its managed and run.

The best place to go to find information about local volunteer opportunities is CVS Bedfordshire and you can also visit our Other Sources of Support pages.

The local primary and secondary schools we support through sponsoring the HEART Academies Trust, and on our Accelerator Programme are also on the lookout for school governors who are skilled, motivated people, committed to making an improvement in local schools. Bedford Borough Council provides a comprehensive programme of governor training and support.

We are also often looking for new trustees. Visit our vaccanices page to see if recruitment is open.

Our History

SIR WILLIAM HARPUR’S VISION

The Harpur Trust was founded over 450 years ago by Sir William Harpur, a local man born to humble beginnings who made his fortune as a merchant tailor and became Lord Mayor of London in 1561.

Today our activities are still inspired by Sir William Harpur’s vision. He understood the value of education, and he saw what needed to be addressed to support the people in his hometown of Bedford.
